BYD expands New Zealand line up with the arrival of Shark 6 Performance and Seal 06 Touring
BYD New Zealand announces the introduction of two new vehicles designed for Kiwi lifestyles: the BYD Shark 6 Performance, offering increased power and towing capability, and the BYD Seal 06 Touring, a long range, ultra efficient plug in hybrid wagon built to go further on less fuel.
Together, the launches reinforce BYD’s commitment to offering real-world solutions for New Zealand drivers - from farmers and tradies to families and fleet customers without compromising performance, practicality or value.
BYD Shark 6 Performance: More Muscle Where Kiwis Need It
The new Shark 6 Performance builds on the success of the Shark platform with meaningful upgrades driven directly by New Zealand customer feedback.
Power output increases to 350kW, an increase of 30kW from the Shark 6 Premium, while torque rises to a massive 700Nm, an additional 50Nm. The result is stronger off-road capability, greater confidence underload, and improved performance in demanding terrain.
Most notably, towing capacity is lifted to the benchmark 3,500kg, making the Shark 6 Performance a serious workhorse for rural and commercial users. Drivers should note that a New Zealand Class Two licence is required for towing loads over 2,500kg.
Designed for farm tracks, forestry roads, beaches and work sites, the Shark 6 Performance delivers enhanced drivetrain tuning for tougher conditions while maintaining the benefits of BYD’s advanced new energy technology.
The BYD Shark 6 Performance is priced at $76,990 plus on road costs, while the Shark 6 Premium is available from $69,990 plus on road costs.
First customer deliveries begin in May, timed deliberately to align with dairy sector cashflow, including Fonterra payout season.
BYD Seal 06 Touring: Go Further, Carry More, Spend Less
Also announced today is the arrival of the BYD Seal 06 Touring Premium, a highly efficient plug-in hybrid wagon that redefines long distance driving for Kiwi families and businesses.
Powered by BYD’s latest DM 5.0 Super Hybrid technology, the Seal 06 Touring delivers a projected driving range of over 1,000km, with WLTP equivalent testing estimating up to 1,300km under combined test conditions. That’s enough to drive from Auckland to Christchurch on a single tank in testing scenarios.
This system combines a high efficiency 1.5 litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine (with 46% thermal efficiency), a BYD electric motor, and BYD's proven LFP Blade Battery technology.
With its 19kWh battery, the Seal 06 Touring offers up to 100km of electric only driving in test conditions - ideal for daily commuting with zero tailpipe emissions.
Priced at $54,990 plus on road costs, the Seal 06 Touring presents a compelling alternative to SUVs, delivering space, efficiency and affordability in one package.
With 670 litres of cargo space (expanding to 1,535 litres with rear seats folded), roof rails, a powered tailgate and a long 2,790mm wheelbase, the Seal 06 Touring is tailored for active Kiwi families, fleet customers and regional drivers who want versatility without excess fuel cost.
BYD is Listening to New Zealanders
BYD New Zealand General Manager Warren Willmot says both launches reflect BYD’s increasing focus on local feedback and real-world use. “New Zealanders don’t want compromise—they want vehicles that actually fit how they live and work,” said Willmot. “Kiwis asked us for more towing, more power and tougher off-road performance, and that’s exactly what the Shark 6 Performance delivers. At the same time, families and businesses told us they wanted to drive further while spending less, and the Seal 06 Touring does that better than anything else in its class. These two vehicles show BYD is listening and, more importantly, acting on what New Zealand really needs."
